Are there any good ai receptionists that can actually handle unpredictable callers, not just scripted ones

I’ll be honest, I’ve been pretty dismissive of AI call tools for a while now. Every demo I’ve seen looks clean until someone asks something slightly off-script and the whole thing falls apart. We run a mid-sized insurance brokerage and our inbound call volume is genuinely messy. Customers call in upset, confused, sometimes both at once. They don’t follow logical conversation paths.

We have a team of four people whose entire job is fielding those calls, and the idea of replacing or even supplementing them with an AI has felt unrealistic to me. But the cost pressure is real and our after-hours missed call rate is becoming a problem we can’t ignore. So I’m starting to take another look.

What I want to know is whether any good ai receptionists out there have actually held up in high-variance call environments, not just simple appointment scheduling or FAQ lookups. If you’ve deployed one in a context where callers were unpredictable or emotional, what actually happened? Did it hold, did it hand off cleanly, or did it just embarrass your business?
